Benzoic benzyl ester is a simple small molecule ester compound with a very faint resin-like aroma. It is naturally present in Peruvian cedar, Turan cedar, as well as in essential oils such as ylang-ylang oil, hyacinth oil, and night-blooming jasmine oil. It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents. It is itself a good high-temperature solvent and is the sole solvent for musk chemicals. Its application in pharmaceuticals and fragrances is determined by its low volatility, excellent solvent properties, and the relatively stable nature of its ester compounds. Benzoic benzyl ester is a flea, louse, and tick killer. Its killing effect on scabies is superior to that of sulfur, without irritation or greasiness. It can also be used as an insect repellent and is often used in combination with benzyl alcohol.

Benzoic benzoate was recognized by FEMA as GRChemicalbookAS, with the FEMA number 2138, and was approved for consumption by the FDA. The European Council included it in the list of artificial food flavorings that can be used in food without endangering human health. Its maximum usage was determined to be 280 mg/kg. The ADI is 5 mg/kg.
Chemical properties
A white oily liquid, slightly viscous. The pure benzyl benzoate is in the form of crystalline tablets; it has a faint aroma of apricot and almond; it is insoluble in water and glycerin, but soluble in most organic solvents. In perfumes, especially in floral fragrances, it is a good fixative, diluent or Chemicalbook solvent. In heavy floral and oriental fragrances, as well as in fragrances such as ylang-ylang, jasmine, sandalwood, and gardenia, it can be used as an enhancer. Benzyl benzoate is also a stabilizer for high-carbon aldehyde or alcohol fragrances and is a good solvent for certain solid fragrances. It is also commonly used as a fixative in food fragrance formulations.
Purpose
Benzyl benzoate can be used as a solvent for cellulose acetate, a fixative for fragrances, a flavoring agent for candies, a plastic plasticizer, and an insect repellent. When used as a fragrance, the product specification can refer to Shanghai Q/QBH68-79, with an ester content of over 99%. It can be used as a fixative for various floral fragrance essences and is also the only best solvent for those solid fragrances that are difficult to dissolve in fragrance essences. It can make artificial musk dissolve in fragrance essences (1kChemicalbookg Benzyl benzoate can dissolve 0.45kg sunflower musk, 0.205kg ketone musk or 0.28kg xylene musk). It is also used to prepare pertussis drugs, asthma drugs, etc. Besides, benzyl benzoate is also used in textile auxiliaries, scabies ointments, pesticide intermediates, etc.; in textile auxiliaries, it is mainly used as a dye guide agent, uniforming agent, and repair agent; in the field of polyester and tight fibers, it is widely used.
